6 Membership Mistakes

1. Cramming too much into the site

Make sure you are delivering value for money. Stop creating tonnes of content and learning and adding it to the site. I know you believe you are helping your members, but that’s not the case. Actually, it will create overwhelm, and often will lead to members not knowing where to start which will stop them from taking action, and eventually, they will leave the group.

2. No structure

Is it community based? Learning based? Maybe both? Something I see a lot is people not establishing the type of membership they will use. Then they end up trying to mix all types into one membership. This not only ends up in chaos, but it ends up being quite confusing. This is hard to market because your messaging is too varied. You also need to decide who your ideal paying clients are. Are they established businesses, and therefore, don’t need so many learning pieces? Or are they startups, and need to have those learning pieces? Make sure you have a clear structure on what your membership is, who it serves, why it is different, what problem it solves and what you want members to do once they join.

3. Not being consistent

You need to know what is happening in order to make sure you don’t miss a thing, and end up in chaos. If you are creating content every month, what date, each month, will it go live? What needs to happen to make sure this works? Plan everything ahead with, ideally, at least a month in advance. If you do this and something happens, you will have some flexibility to still be able to go live on the agreed date. You want your members to be excited and waiting for the next bit of content, which they can’t do if they don’t know when it is going to be live. If they don’t know it they won’t take action and won’t see the value in money.

4. Following the herd

The membership model works really well and it can be great, but you need to bring your uniqueness to the table. Don’t follow what others have done, otherwise you are competing with no USP (unique selling point). This will make the membership fall flat. The membership model has been validated and it’s fine to use. But what are you creating? Who are you targeting? You need to stand out.

5. No innovation

You have a membership that is booming. Great! But that doesn’t mean the hard work stops there. You need to stay ahead of the trends. A lot of people think “Great! I have a business that is generating a profit, I’m not going to change it. After all, if it’s not broke don’t fix it, right?”. This is a big mistake. Yes, you have something that works for the time being, but if you don’t move forward and stay with the trends, you will slowly fall behind. And before you know it, you are back where you started.

6. No systems.

Of course systems would be here! Systems are the difference between success and happiness or success and burnout. Make sure you have the right systems set up so when you become busy with members, you’ll not be lacking on the backend stuff. As a minimum, you will want to have on-boarding, off-boarding, content creation, retention, customer service and launching systems. And just bonus tip: just because others are doing it, it doesn’t mean you have to do it too. If others have a Facebook group community, and you really don’t want that, don’t have a Facebook community. Pull together another way to connect. Just because others spend a lot on a hosting platform, it doesn’t mean you have to. If the fault of tech is holding you back from launching this membership, don’t! Launch it without a hosting platform. A lot of people have launched really successful memberships, just within a Facebook group, or a community group, or just emailed out the content. You don’t need to have an all-singing-all-dancing membership portal, when you start. So there you have it! The mistakes you need to avoid (or stop making) now, in order to generate long term success with your membership. As always, if you’ve enjoyed this blog make sure you comment below. And if you’re making some of these mistakes and you’ll stop making them (let’s face it, these are mistakes that a lot of people make) then let us know how you get on. Until next week, bye!
